Trader (and others) should not gain silver when card that triggered is not gainable #150

Should I be able to get Silvers if there is no curses?

You are not gaining Curse. You cannot use  Trader. Same with Torturer or Witch 
when Curse pile is empty. Only when you can exchange one card for another you 
can use Trader ability. Same with Tunnel.   When Gold pile is empty you cannot 
gain Silver instead.

I was unsure about this, because it isn't covered in the faq, but kamil is 
right.  Donald X confirmed it here (last post on the page):

"Trader only works if you really would gain a card. If you try to gain a card 
from an empty pile, you can't use Trader then."
