Develop a VLC/mplayer wrapper script that gets video file metadata to Memacs #56

I'd like to have a script that is a wrapper to VLC media player (or mplayer) which logs the names of the video files and the start+end time-stamp of playback to Memacs.

A proof of concept trial did turn out more complicated than it seems. I had difficulties wrapping vlc on Debian GNU/Linux.
