Hi Kari, here is an attempt for hierarchical categories of vegetation types. I put Ellenberg classes as level 2 and MODIS as level 3. See what you think:

  1. Closed 1.1 Closed forests 1.1.1 Evergreen Needleleaf Forest [MODIS 1] 1.1.2 Evergreen Broadleaf Forest [MODIS 2] 1.1.3 Deciduous Needleleaf Forest [MODIS 3] 1.1.4 Deciduous Broadleaf Forest [MODIS 4] 1.1.5 Mixed Forests [MODIS 5] 1.2 Woodlands 1.2.1 Woody Savannas [MODIS 8] 1.3 Shrublands 1.3.1 Closed Shrublands [MODIS 6]
  2. Open 2.1 Dwarf-scrublands 2.1.2 Open Shrublands [MODIS 7] 2.2 Herbaceous communities 2.2.1 Savannas [MODIS 9] ??? not sure about this 2.2.2 Grasslands [MODIS 10] 2.3 Scarcely vegetated areas 2.3.1 Barren or Sparsely Vegetated [MODIS 16] 2.4 Aquatic plant formations 2.4.1 Permanent Wetlands [MODIS 11] cheers,

Indrė Hi Indrė, this looks promising. We should continue modifying the definitions you made. I made some comparisons with the current NOW biomes and Vegetation structures. For me, it seems that we already have most of these values. The NOW vegetation structure is closed, semi-open and open. Also, most of the biomes are close to the ones from Modis. I have made a table with some comparisons from the original MODIS paper and also some more traditional classification of African vegetation from Reed 1997.

Maybe we can continue the discussion a bit later. Hi Kari, I just looked at this again, looks good either way. So would you put savanna to woodlands at level 2? I'm online today, will be offline for the next two weeks starting tomorrow. If there is anything that I'd better do now, let me know. cheers, Indrė
