3 years ago npm isn't officially distributed on apt, and shouldn't be installed with it ever (nor should node itself).
npm comes with node, and installs itself. There's a separate npm install script, but that's a last resort.

3 years ago Exactly as @ljharb put it. We don't officially distribute via apt, and we do not maintain the builds that do exist.
Is there an existing issue for this?
