maps: Should globe have a shadow? #84

Currently have a prototype that i sort of hate, but we can play with it. https://observablehq.com/d/6b7169dac0bfee3a

There's also the option of a drop shadow behind the earth. It currently has that here which could work to give it a sort of felt-board, literal cut and paste vibe. Whether we want that, I do not know.

Looking for thoughts from Aly and Connie :)

You mean the gray gradient? I don't love it? It feels a little too shiny vs. the rougher sketchy lines.

On the second one, I think the drop shadow on the lines is generally fine but it's too dark — I'd lighten/soften it a bit.

I'm late to this but I generally agree with Aly. I think if we added more details to the globe to make it more realistic and merge with the sketchy style, then the gray gradient could work? But maybe not as a standalone as it is now.

For the drop shadow on the lines, I think it's helpful to establish some sort of hierarchy when there's a lot of lines.
