This commit removes the gradient as discussed. Obviously it can easily be reinstated later. I have left the gradient generator function in place as it has potential future generic use.

Weird to still have 12 breaks, mild preference for that to be removed, but gets the job done for now so merging.

Not sure what you mean - there are no breaks now.

NB The network filter slider commit seems to have got mixed into this PR. It's obviously a different thing.
