i18n: rename "Ascend & plain ascend"?

Dear All, I have been translating the web platform and I am puzzled what ascend & plain ascend means.

• ascend: perhaps the whole elevation difference what should be done to reach the destination
• plain ascend: perhaps the elevation difference between start point and destination

However, if I look at the height profile of a route, figures don't exactly match these definitions…

It is as above.

But the ascend is named "filtered ascend" in the final stats of the BRouter itself.

Filtered ascend is the raw ascend as get by applying SRTM altitudes, with applied the 10m hysteresis filter.

Hungary may look rather flat for this filter. Edit: Try it on longer and hilly routes. In my experience, as a rule of thumb, raw ascend with near zero plain ascend gives as much as double(Like Locus import of GPX from Brother/Brouter-web), compared to filtered ascend.

As you wrote:

• ascend = total ascend = cumulative elevation gain (" sum of every gain in elevation throughout an entire trip")
• plain ascend = height difference (between start and end point)

And as poutnikl already said, "ascend" is really "filtered ascend", not sure if it will get too long, but maybe we should label it as such, while "filtered total ascend" probably is too long.

Personally, I'm not quite happy with the term "plain ascend" and might want to rename it, perhaps to:

• height difference
• difference in altitude
• difference in elevation

Any opinions, other suggestions?

What about Linear elevation ? Btw, as EN non native, is elevation and altitude the same thing, or is the former rather altitude difference ?
