FORNAX - Galaxies Structural Parameters #16

Open KiaraSpin opened 6 years ago

KiaraSpin commented 6 years ago

Within the FDS collaboration, we have a 9 square degree area mosaic around the center of the Fornax Cluster. It is a large and deep field of view where we can apply the tools we are using for KiDS. The goal is to study the structural parameters of all the galaxies we detect and extract.

KiaraSpin commented 6 years ago

We produced (are producing) catalogs for the single pointings. Enrica produced the mosaic, it will be available soon. Then 2DPHOT and Sexetractor need to be run and we need to customize the parameters for the extraction and make them optimized for galaxies.

We are almost ready (with photometry) to move to the training of the machine learning. We need to collect all the redshifts info (from @gdago and from the literature)

AI @gdago and @ctortora discuss the details of it. Please make the catalog of all the spectroscopic redshifts available.

ctortora commented 6 years ago

We have catalogs of galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts from a) VIMOS (processed by @gdago ), b) literature.

Natasha Maddox sent me a catalog they were using for the targets of their new observations. The catalog consists of 2dF spectra, taken from M. Drinkwater.

When we will have the photometry, I will join the spectroscopic data, and I will send all the dataset to the Machine Learning people.

GM 14/05 @ctortora and @gdago need to coordinate effort and share a catalog which contains ALL the literature redshifts in a square of 9x9 sq.deg.

We need to do this before the SUNDIAL meeting (11-15/05)

fds_redshifts

Maybe I messed up coordinates, before. This seems to be more reliable. According to the new catalog Crescenzo sent me, this is what we've got in total 6823 spectra coming from VIMOS and 2dF in the central 9deg2 around NGC1399

The catalog is here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/20mlz58bp85bmun/FORNAX_redshifts.fits?dl=0

gdago commented 6 years ago

After checking again I found I didn't messed up coordinates. There are simply two catalogs. The one matching the FDS area is from Michael Drinkwater et al. (2000). We've got 6840 spec-z within 9deg2 around NGC1399. We go up to 12525 if we consider the whole FDS area (26deg2).

The plot shows the 26deg2 of FDS and the blue box contains the 9deg2 around NGC1399. Included in the catalog there is also a small number of QSOs. fds_26deg2

Updated catalogs are here: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/49rojjcl0seztkh/AADARYe2ICTqW4vsauMlrAnXa?dl=0

@MariaAngelaRaj produced the catalog with 9sq.deg. (only missing some statistical info for few galaxies, e.g. chi2)

Spectroscopic redshifts are obtained by @gdago matching 6dF . We need to obtain the catalogs so that we can let the machine learning tools work on the photometric redshifts.

I guess @MariaAngelaRaj https://github.com/MariaAngelaRaj has finished 1 over the 9 deg2

GM 09/07 AI for Angela: talk to Renyer and get knownledge on how to run the KiDSKat on the mosaic

KiaraSpin commented 6 years ago

GM 18/07 Angela is currently in Groningen and she discussed this with Renyer... more updates will come
