I needed this to be able to run the tests cleanly. The smaller changes get rid of bundler and jeweler warnings.

More notable changes:

removed dependency on the redgreen gem, because it made minitest crash
pinned rspec to 2.x, because stub!, which is used extensively in specs, has been removed in 3.0
