For formatting, I think the problem was lack of blank lines around the list. Markdown will merge lines that don't have blank lines in between them, so it's important to separate high-level elements, like paragraphs, lists, headings, code blocks, with blank lines. I'll use multiple blank lines where I feel it helps code readability (they'll all be collapsed to 1 blank line at render time).
