SHHS MOP 6-626-mop-rules-for-assigning-sleep-stages, stage 1 comment about the “3 minute rule”: the MOP has the “3 minute rule” about intervals between K complexes or sleep spindles, but scorers did not use this rule since it was too difficult [time consuming] to track the duration between K or spindles. Once in stage 2 we continued to score stage 2 unless there was a transition to deep sleep, REM, or wake. The AASM 2007 scoring rules did away with the “3 minute rule” as well.
