Interesting. I'm not sure I want this experience personally, but since it seems like interesting work I'll try to work on this at some point.
Thanks for the answer- Yeah, it does not have to be made mandatory and leaving it up to users to enable or disable it is fine, I think.
Probably it makes sense to have it on by default if indeed it makes the experience more intuitive as you propose. But yes, it would certainly be turn-off-able. :)
One more thing that would help to associate, in the users mind, B with right and a with left would be to let the next text to be displayed quickly scroll in the appropriate direction instead or simply being refreshed at once. This is a technique used in many UIs: the PS3 does it, the Xbobx360 does it, it really helps to build a sense of space.
