Dimensional (Valence & Arousal) Annotation

The definition of valence and arousal dimensions was adapted from [3] and was given to annotators in our tutorial as: “Valence refers to how positive or negative an event is, and arousal reflects whether an event is exciting/agitating or calm/soothing”.

A sample circumplex with estimated positions of several expressions, borrowed from [61], was provided in the tutorial as a reference for the annotators.

A predefined estimated region of valence and arousal was defined for each categorical emotion in the annotation software (e.g., for happy emotion the valence is in (0.0, 1.0], and the arousal is in [-0.2, 0.5] ).
