Name: Adenike Ateloye Projects: Signac | OpenRefine Project Governance Model Links: Signac governance model; https://signac.io/governance/ OpenRefine governance model; https://github.com/OpenRefine/OpenRefine/blob/master/GOVERNANCE.md

Overview Signac The Signac project aims to create software that assists in data management and the creation and execution of workflows that utilize said data. It is an open-source community project based on consensus.

OpenRefine OpenRefine is a potent free, open-source tool for handling jumbled data, including cleaning, format conversion, and extension with web services and outside data.

SIMILARITIES • Both initiatives are open-source community projects that rely on user consensus and free exchange of ideas in accordance to both projects’ governance models • These initiatives have clear codes of conduct that govern everyone in the community's behavior in general and how decisions are made. • Both of these governance models are built on openness and transparency principles that guide their decision-making and encourage community involvement and participation. • Both governance models have unique leadership structures, with team members responsible in decision- making and managing every aspect of the project. • Everyone with an interest according to both government models are welcome to join the community, contribute to its design, and take part in the decision-making process. • The voting mechanism is the main technique of decision-making in both models of governance.

DIFFERENCES Structuring • OpenRefine does not have dedicated administrators; instead, relies on its contributors to keep the website updated, improve it, and carry out other tasks. Nonetheless, Signac have administrators to manage the infrastructure required to keep the Signac project running well. Conflict of interest • While OpenRefine has a conflict-of-interest provision which aids in resolving conflicts, Signac does not have any model to guide conflict resolutions. Fund Raising • In addition to having clearly established methods for raising funds, OpenRefine employs a project director who helps in locating and securing new sources of funding. However, Signac does not include any provisions for obtaining funds Voting participation • At Signac, vote involvement is largely by project maintainers and other administrators, but, OpenRefine governanace model incorporates everyone in decision-making.

MY OPINION Both projects have a governance structure that emphasizes teamwork and member participation. However, Signac's model of governance is superior because, the distinct roles that each member of the project is expected to play is clearly defined, which I feel will enable members to perform better and be more focused on their obligations as well as increase operational efficiency by minimizing misunderstanding and redundancies.

@Oyetayo12 - this is a very strong analysis. Exactly what we are looking for. Your use of language is excellent and, being able to provide an opinion on one model over another is necessary when presenting an analysis. Kudos!
