ANALYSIS OF THE GOVERNANCE MODELS
GNU Radio's governance model uses online voting for decision-making, but with varying degrees of voting rights for members based on their membership type. Suprisingly, for the GNU Radio, the General assembly seem to wield more authority than the Board as against most contemporary organizations where the Board usually holds the final say. Governance of The Carpentries is done by the Executive Council, to whom the Executive Director reports and The Council comprises nine members, from The Carpentries community or others, four elected by the community, and five appointed from the Executive Council. This goes to show that both organizations are community oriented
Differences
GNU Radio has two major decision making bodies which is the General Assembly and the Board while The Carpentries has just one which is The Executive Council.
GNU Radio decison making system is decentralised,no one person holds a ultimate authority over a decision but The Carpentries concentrates Authority on the Executive Council.
Similarities
Both organizations use the online platforms as a means of meeting.
Both have by laws which govern operation and behavior.
Both run community based model of governance.
Both organizations are community oriented.
MY OPINION
Though they are both coomunity centred and may have been effective in their different ways, GNU Radio governance model seems like a preferred model because power belongs to the General Assembly and this helps bring about transparency and trusted intergrity.
