Lock screen is black (ubuntu 16.04/16.10) #630

Sometimes, when the screen is locked and turned off after the configured delay, when i return to the pc and activate it the screen is black and i can only see the mouse pointer. I tried typing the password even so but with no luck. The logs show no useful information.

It was hard diagnosing it as a numix issue but the fact is it only happens when i select the numix theme. I'm using ubuntu 16.10 and have 2.6.5+606-201610230531-ubuntu16.10.1 currently installed, from the ppa.

Is there something i can do to help further diagnose this issue?

I couldn't reproduce it. Try to restart nautilus using nautilus -q

gjm commented 7 years ago

I've tried it!

The thing is it's not deterministic! I can't quite identify what triggers it. I can tell it only happens when the screen goes off by the power timeout. If i manually lock it it works fine. But when the screen goes off sometimes when i activate it all is well sometimes the screen is black. Only the mouse pointer shows.

I can definitely confirm it has something to do with Numix because i've (temporarily) switched back to the default Ambiance theme and it hasn't happened once since then. As soon as i use Numix, sooner or later it happens.

Is there something i can do to help out diagnose this?

Thanks for your time.

Give step-by-step "How-to-reproduce". Then we can diagnose the issue.

gjm commented 7 years ago

Well... that's by problem... i can't...

Here's what happens to me:

  1. Wait until the lock screen timeout expires and the screen turns off.
  2. Wait a random amount of time.
  3. Move mouse to activate screen.

I just tried on vm. Sorry I couldn't reproduce this. Since it only happens after screenlock, it could be a problem with your compiz. Try change lockscreen wallpaper and make sure the wallpaper has set for 755 permission mode.

Closing as it is not a theme issue.

eekfonky commented 7 years ago

I get the same issue, only happened since I installed Numix

khurshid-alam commented 7 years ago

@eekfonky Can you try if it still happens for 17.04?

eekfonky commented 7 years ago

Sorry, but it's a production system and I need it stable. I'll test it again in two months though ;-)

My error occurs every time at boot. My SSD is encrypted and I have to type the password on the black screen to get to login

@eekfonky By any chance are you using nemo?

eekfonky commented 7 years ago

What is nemo? Other than a fictional character? I'm using Ubuntu with Nautilus (Nemo's ship)

Not an gtk theme issue.

mverleg commented 7 years ago

I'm having the same issue (found this through Google). To the best of my knowledge I don't have Numix installed (and didn't find in apt installed packages). So I think this may indeed be unrelated, I thought I'd mention that.
