Need to define the following (either 3.1 or the protocol):

fully-typed configuration, untyped configuration, python configuration
what it means to "infer" a fully-typed configuration
typed components
experimental vs. control modules
the dynamic type
Dyn
type conversion step (seems necessary to explain the protocol)
