Expecting a candidate to know C++ is a very practical use case that should be allowed

This is a valid point! Indeed, we agree that C++ can be a valid requirement.

However, as our app considers the broader job market and not just the tech industry, what you will find is that most requirements can be represented using only alphanumeric characters. Furthermore, there are convenient ways to write down requirements with symbols using just alphanumeric characters. Using your example of C++, we can express it as Cpp which actually uses less key presses.

I hope that you will agree with our assessment of why we chose to lower the severity of this to low as such.
