Seems like an incomplete feature since user are able to enter all sorts of weird types, could have implemented some sort of list of standard types to check before accepting the the user input

The type of the pet here refers to the species of animals. There are many animals out there that have numbers in their species, hence the team did not use any standard types to check. For example there are types that are 7 spotted ladybugs or 6 spotted tiger beetles.
