Daily precipitation from MSWEP #471

MSWEP is a globally gridded, gauge corrected precipitation product with resolution down to a daily scale. It is available for free to academics. PW planned to test how well it matched up with Siddharth Bharath's weather data initiative in NutNet to see if it could be used as a more readily available and less time intensive product for NutNet.

PW also worked with this with Drought-Net / NPKD-Net which had on-site and semi-local weather station data provided by many site PIs. There, it was clear that daily estimates were quite varied and large rain events were often 1-7 days displaced. Aggregating to monthly and yearly values performed better, but high elevation sites in particular are problematic - though it is unclear if MSWEP or the weather station data was inaccurate as weather station data could often be 10+ km away.

This should be tested with Siddharth's weather station data, and if fidelity is high enough, some aggregate precip value (yearly?) could be periodically uploaded and output to the NutNet and DRAGNet communities.
