Sofya is a MSR (Master of Science in Robotics) graduate with a background of artificial intelligence. She's currently a resident of the Garage at Northwestern working on an AR idea for real estates. Her team uses Microsoft HoloLens as their platform and develop their apps on Unity3D. She uses lots of assets from the Unity Asset Store to save time and effort for creating them. She feels the store needs more high-quality real world object model like furniture and there will be an increasing demand from AR/VR/MR developers as they want to achieve higher fidelity. She's using some furniture models from IKEA as they have very good fidelity and thinks branded real world object model is a great opportunity that might bring additional revenue if done right.
Identified Issues
Unity Asset Store has a huge collection of 3D assets for developers to reuse. However, only a tiny subset of the available assets can be linked to real world objects. This is not an issue for purely hypothetical world, but will significantly increase the development effort for applications like online shopping, real estate, brand and product advertising, etc.
Existing Solutions
According to Sofya, there are already companies focusing on particular types of assets like furniture. IKEA released 3D models of their furniture and some of the developers are using them for their app/game.
