I know... this is a big PR with opinionated/arguable changes.
I'm currently working on D8 projects using the latest drupal/drupal-extension v4.0.1 so I had to update quite a few things.
I can split some of those changes if needed, or maybe this can be the start of a 2.x branch?
I'm open to any suggestions.
