Radio Buttons in a group is not announced as a group #13970

Steps to reproduce:

Go to https://stackblitz.com/edit/clarity-13-dg-single-selection

Actual behavior:

The radio buttons in the datagird having the same name should be recognized as a group.

NVDA reads:

John radio button checked 1 of 1

Expected behavior:

Radio buttons of John and Jack should be read as John radio button checked 1 of 2 or Jack radio button checked 2 of 2.

Besides, the MDN example of radio buttons can be recognized as a group and announced correctly.

NVDA version:

2022.2

Windows version:

Windows 10 Enterprise 21H2

Name and version of other software in use when reproducing the issue:

Chrome Version 103.0.5060.134

This website fails to build the page for me. Would you be able to provide a minimal HTML sample to reproduce this using codepen, rather than using Angular?

Hi @seanbudd, please find the minimal HTML sample here.

In the page preview, you'll find two groups of radio buttons. The first group is abnormal while the second group is normal.

I think the root cause is that each radio button of the first group is wrapped by an element with role property set to gridcell. This only reproduces in Chrome and Edge, not Firefox.

The same behavior has been observed by setting the wrapper element's role to a wide range of values from the list at https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/Accessibility/ARIA/Roles.

Hey, @seanbudd please let us know if you need more samples. I am experiencing the same issue and can confirm that if the table rows and columns have "row" or "gridcell" role, the radio button grouping does not work. It would be nice if the system made grouping based on the name of the input as it's the one thing that generally defines the correct group.
