I can reproduce this issue with all stable versions even from 2023.x version series. In my case, the issue happens after every restart when the multiple addons were installed in succession, respectively. Let me illustrate this with an example: For example download any two addons from the store. Intall these addons. Your NVDA will restart, and you will see these hangs.
It is becomming really annoying that this is happening for years and wonder if would able to diagnose it, but unfortunately without success.

Which view / pane are you using in Windows explorer? Do you have navigation pane and / or preview pane enabled or disabled? Do you have the details window enabled or disabled?
I tried disabling/enabling every single pane and/or combination. It doesn't matter what is turned on/off, nvda is causing explorer to crash when nvda is exiting.

This problem is not caused by plugins. I always use NVDA without plugins and I have this problem.
Hi,
I think this also happens without any File Explorer part of explorer.exe open - when NVDA closes, explorer.exe (process itself) may restart. The next step would be figuring out which past NVDA release did not exhibit this issue and narrow down the search (Git bisect, for example).
Thanks.
@beqabeqa473 could you please retest with the last alpha of NVDA? I think #16205 and #16222 might have affected this positively.
Hello. #16205 won't be able to fix this as this issue is not related to installer at all.
@beqabeqa473 I'd be glad to get feedback on the whole comment, there is also #16222. So did you test the last alpha of NVDA? Can you still reproduce this issue?
Just observed an explorer crash with latest alpha.

The next steps to investigating this issue would be creating a crash dump from explorer using these steps. Once a crash dump is created we can debug the cause.
Hello,
I encountered an Explorer crash yesterday as well, after going to the run dialog, typing "downloads" and pressing enter. Instead of the Explorer window opening, Explorer crashed and I was returned to the desktop and NVDA said "desktop 1" as noted in the original issue description.
Unfortunately, I do not appear to have a folder showing crash dumps, so I'm not sure where to find this, or if I need to enable anything to have Windows generate these crash dumps. This was on NVDA 2024.4 and Windows 11 24H2, build 26100.2033.
Thank you very much for your time and I look forward to any input you may have.
Thanks,
Brandon
Hello Nvaccess, this is Mayson c here. I too, have encountered the explorer crash when closing firefox with alt plus f4. I closed firefox and explorer.exe crashed, taking NVDA down with it. here is the link to the crash dump file.

This is happening even on the clean system installation, without any additional software
Steps to reproduce:
It is hard to reproduce, but i am sure most of us are suffering from this. When debugging nvda or addons, and we restart nvda, at some point windowsexplorer will crash, task switcher hangs for about 5-10 seconds, explorer restarts and nvda says "Desktop 1"
Actual behavior:
Explorer is crashing on NVDA unload
Expected behavior:
No explorer crash should appear
NVDA logs, crash dumps and other attachments:
Unfortunately it is hard to reproduce this reliably, because of this, no logs.
System configuration
NVDA installed/portable/running from source:
Installed, from source
NVDA version:
alpha-31113,6a43521f
Windows version:
Windows 11 23H2 (AMD64) build 22631.3155 Also was reproduceable on windows 10
Name and version of other software in use when reproducing the issue:
Windows explorer
