NVDA suddenly goes away for some reason... #7507

Steps to reproduce:

Actually, there are almost any. In fact this problem happens not always in a same way; I'd say randomly... The most often this happens when I press Windows key quickly or when go to Network Connections window and press on a Close button which appears if PC is unable to connect to a network... After this happens NVDA is unable to do anything (speak, react to key presses and so on; I need to restart it completely to get it back)...

Expected behavior:

Working as usually...

Actual behavior:

NVDA totaly crashes! (Note: not always...)

System configuration:

NVDA version: master-14328,c6379eb3 NVDA Installed or portable: Installed. Other information: Windows version: Windows 10Ver1703 (64-bit) build 15063.540

Name and version of other software in use when reproducing the issue: I think "SearchUI.EXE" or "ShellExperienceHost.exe" (not sure though)...

Other questions:

Does the issue still occur after restarting your PC? Yes (often, but not always) Have you tried any other versions of NVDA? Yes, tried with 2017.2 Stable and with all Master versions since July or so. Also, if this will be helpful, using WinTenApps latest development channel... log_output.txt

Hi, does this happen with the add-on mentioned is disabled? If not, then this is yet another manifestation of the app switching problem discussed in earlier issues. Thanks.

ello, Tried that problem with add-ons disabled, and I didn't need to wait for long time - this problem happened just by pressing Windows key after NVDA started with add-ons disabled... Thanks. Sincerely, Paulius Leveris

@Pauliusleveris are you still having this issue on Windows 10 1809 Update with NVDA 2018.4? Which security programs do you have on your PC?

@Pauliusleveris this is just a reminder, can you still reproduce this issue? Note thaht such specific issues are not easy to reproduce for every one so we are relying on your tests. If we do not have updates on this issue, it will be closed sooner or later without any result unfortunately.

Could I offer an idea about this one? I've noticed this from time to time. It seems to me that sometimes windows Explorer crashes and either does not come back or does something odd like leave a message on the screen that locks up nvda. Its a system message so I would suggest to the person if they are still getting it to put narrator on as well as nvda as often when this happens, narrator can see the offending message. Sometimes repeatedly hitting esc clears it, but often it needs nvda to be rebooted and that seems to clear it unless windows has gone into sulk mode .

It happens on windows 7 as well. Weirdly there is no indication of a problem in the old log. It just reports keypresses but has no watchdog bits or errors just never actually speaks anything after it has happened. Sorry its not a major issue, but seems to be connected to a system error in windows to do with explorer or part of the network bits, which of course can also include Explorer if you are trying to open a link to a machine which is not on for example. I think its windows doing strange things to the info its sending to nvda, personally though I cannot understand why I cannot open task manager or the nvda menu. Its been around for a long time but is quite rare.

No help at all, but as you say, its hard to do much when nothing is available to look at. Even windows if restarted does not seem to note it as a problem even though you often stop it with the button. Brian

@Brian1Gaff whic NVDA version are you using? Also your issue with not being able to open the nVDA menu or the task manager could be caused by several things. Did you rung a com registration fixing tool in NVDA menu / tool to see if this solves the issue? Also a new installation of NVDA could solve it as well. But you also should remove the user configuration in %appdata% and then reinstall NVDA.

Hello, I agree with Brian. In my opinion it is an explorer issue, it's noticable yet when tabbing around open windows or when connecting a USB stick to pc, any keepress and/or screen reader activity is much slower than usually, it goes back to normal after ten or fifteen secs, when all notifications saying that a device is ready to use are dismissed. So the issue really persists and quite often, running latest NVDA stable. That's it for now. In my view, there would be a need to talk about this with Microsoft and see what would be their opinion. P.S Can't see that lagging running JAWS 2018, for example.
