6 years ago Hi, does the developer of this program know something about accessibility? I think a discussion from the app’s end would be a bit better so it can be done from the app first, and if the developer is unwilling, then I think screen reader folks should consider coming up with a support module. I realize this fits more into an addon, however as some programs like Poedit or Miranda have this implemented already at the core level, I thought I could give it a try. Eventually the issue may be closed and could be carried on as an addon idea.
The Subtitle Edit software is an opensource subtitle creation tool which is quite popular among subtitle translators. It is accessible as it is (based on standard Windows controls and packed with hotkeys that make performing common tasks easier), however as I experienced while working with this software in class, what is missing is a way for a blind translator to tell whether he's done his job correctly i.e. if the subs are placed exactly as they should be. To accommodate this need I have devised the following model:
- have a sound indicate when a sub appears on screen and when it disappears from it to tell how long the sub is present on screen;
- have NVDA read out the currently displayed subtitle;
- an extra feature which as I understand is currently impossible to be coded within NVDA would be a sound indicating the wrapping of a subtitle to the next line. so that the translator knows whether a given sub is formulated in a way that is convenient to read;
I have created an issue on the Subtitle Edit repo and got a response stating that if I find a developer who will do this, they will be happy to integrate the PR so I thought I'd go the NVDA route instead.

Implementing these enhancements would boost the productivity of blind subtitle translators and would make it possible for the blind to get involved in projects of creating subtitles for movies (currently Netflix is hiring in that area as far as I'm informed).
Of course, shall the proposed enhancement be not enough or headed in the completely wrong direction, discussion is welcome.
