new term - prophylaxis #66

Open GoogleCodeExporter opened 8 years ago

Following up on http://code.google.com/p/ogms/issues/detail?id=65, could we
create a new term "prophylaxis" with alternative label "prophylactic treatment"
and "preventive treatment"?
Proposed definition: "A processual entity whose completion is aimed at
preventing apparition of signs and symptoms associated with a disorder"
It would also be useful to add a note explaining why this is not a subclass of
treatment.

Thanks,
Melanie

I thought:
"A planned process that has the objective to reduce the risk of establishing a
specific disorder"

a) these should all be planned processes
b) vaccination or brushing teeth is not aimed at reducing signs and symptoms,
but from preventing the disorder in the first place. I think that is true for
all prophylaxis.
c) I think all prophylaxis can only aim to reduce risk, not guarantee that a
disorder will nevertheless occur.

To capture the email debate on the textual definition in the tracker: I am fine
with the proposed changes to leave out the unnecessary 'specific', change to
allow for more than one disorders, and I also prefer 'acquiring' over my
original 'establishing', which would make the definition:

"A planned process that has the objective to reduce the risk of acquiring one
or more disorders."

'prophylaxis' has been added in OGMS v0.9, this issue will be left open to
assist in the further refinement and possible renaming of 'treatment'
