Pry is optional, so you can use it without pry. I haven't considered upgrading my plugins as I don't think I have anything really pry specific.
I don't mind loading it manually, I like being explicit. If I don't like it for some reason, I can always comment that require and it goes away (it's in the global gemset when used with irb-config).
Pry suggests you prefix plugins with "pry-". Have you considered upgrading your plugins to support this naming pattern?
This will make your plugin autoload so you don't have to manually include it in the pryrc
