Can't delelete pre-existing text with backspace

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Write some text and go back to command mode. 
2. Re-enter insert mode.
3. Press backspace on any text that wasn't typed since last entering insert 
mode.

What is the expected output?
Backspace should remove characters in insert mode.

What do you see instead?
Nothing happens.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
App version: 1.5
Android version: 4.0.

Please provide any additional information below.
Using Android TF101 with hardware keyboard dock.
