Question regarding "PAH" terms [BODCNVS-2488] #50

A question to the group regarding the linking of P01 codes of N-PAHs, S-PAHs, O-PAHs to the P02s: BCAH Concentration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in biota GP050 Concentration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the atmosphere PCAH Concentration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in suspended particulate material PCHW Concentration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the water column SCAH Concentration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in sediment samples

Several P01 codes containing these types of chemicals are already linked to these P02s. The question is, should they have been and should we continue to do so? If so, the description to the P02s will require an update.

In my opinion, it would be easier to amend the definition to include parent PAHs and substituted PAHs (e.g. alkyl-PAHs, carbonyl-PAHs, nitro-PAHs, and hydroxyl-PAHs) to cover PAH derivatives. Alternatively, a new set of P02s would need to be created for PAH derivatives in each matrix. But I don't think the creation of these particular P02s should take priority over the creation of P02s for things like organobromines and organofluorenes.

@SLBlakeman @MeganAnneFrench Is this ticket linked to another one? I am asking because from this ticket alone, it is not clear to me what are the issues we are trying to resolve? Is it cover for derivatives of PAH? Do we have any already and if so which P02 are they linked to at the moment? And is it the label or the definition that we are proposing to change? or both?

@MeganAnneFrench thanks for your input. Gwen and I have spoken and have decided for the time being to keep the substituted PAHs in the "other contaminants" P02s. I will review the existing linkages and make changes where necessary. The PAH P02s will be reserved for parent PAHs only.
