When playing I noticed that I was able to cancel Extra Chance while the first gem of the placement phase was being placed. My worry was that this meant that Extra Chance would be active, despite the gold refund. It turns out that this worry was unfounded.
However, it does bring forth a design decision: should Extra Chance, or any pre-placement ability, be usable (i.e. activated or cancelled) once the first gem is in the process of being placed? Probably not.
