Feature Request: Keyboard shortcuts to navigate message list view (Gmail p/n. Page up / page down etc) #830

When a message thread is open the n/p keys (gmail) should be usable to select the current message in the thread. The r or a keys should then be usable to reply or reply-all along with other message specific shortcuts.

gmail account mac 10.11.2 N1 Version 0.3.32-b11131d (0.3.32-b11131d)

Just for your knowledge the shortcut keys are listed under Preferences -> Shortcuts. The r key does a reply to only the sender and the a key does a reply to all thread participants.

While not implemented, I wanted to clarify the n and p shortcuts are for advancing to the next message or going back to the previous message, respectively. I see these from Gmail's Keyboard shortcut screen, screenshot below.

Sorry, poorly described on my part. I just meant to request similar functionality to gmail. Where n/p navigates messages, and the o/a/r shortcuts apply to the currently selected message. I know that r/a is already implemented. But currently it only applies to the last message in the thread.

I've also gotten requests for page up and page down in the message list. I'm going to rename this thread to, in general, add support for keyboard shortcuts in the message list.

What's the status of being able to use n/p to move among messages within a conversation? It looks like there's a binding for it in the Gmail.cson file, but it's not listed in the settings UI in the app when selecting the "Gmail" template, and doesn't appear to be possible to set it manually in the custom keybindings file (though I'm not totally sure I have the syntax of that file right).

Thanks.

or at least support up/down arrow arrow keys when reading mail thread.

mbilker commented 8 years ago

@abhiomkar Currently the up/down arrow keys go to the previous/next message in the previously viewed folder.

jstejada commented 8 years ago

@mbilker , what do you mean previously viewed folder? this should be addressed with #915

mbilker commented 8 years ago

@jstejada I mean that if I was viewing messages in label Label1 and pressed the up/down arrows, it will navigate to the previous/next message in Label1.

+1.

Any status update on this?

I'd also add to this the ability to use to page forward in the message preview area. This isn't a listed keyboard binding in the GMail shortcuts pane, but it does work in the app.

Ideas to potentially add UI elements as well: https://github.com/nylas/N1/issues/2727

This is the one big missing piece of Gmail keyboard navigation.
