TBH, I don't see this as an improvement? It's not very sensitive to call the Ukrainians Russians, or to say it were only the British in the war rather than the whole United Kingdom + commonwealth.
I would rather go towards calling them the British Empire, the French Third Republic, The Russian Empire, The German Empire, The Ottoman Empire and the Austro-Hungarian Empire. And maybe include the names in the original languages in the beginning of the rules.

Sounds fine to me as well, I was preferring the nationalities for the short length of the names. Why couldn't the French just go for the French Empire? Pffff, history...
I'll change the pull request accordingly.
And maybe include the names in the original languages in the beginning of the rules.
You mean like 'Россійская Имперія' for Russian Empire, just for flavor?
Last commit contains the flavor, if we don't like it, it can be reverted.
Maybe just French Third Republic in the beginning, and otherwise French Republic? Both are correct, but the first has a little more flavor to it.
Otherwise, according to my research:
Beat you to it :)
Looks good to me. Verbose in the beginning, shorthand everywhere else.
Given that we also have the random initialization, and to avoid confusion of player names resembling a region, I went for the nationalities.
