Question: Mask-wearing data #408

Will you be publishing the data used in today's article tracking mask-wearing behavior at a county level over time? This would be enormously helpful for research.

It was provided by Dynata's Survey, but I have not been able to find any public data available for it.

Hi folks, we are considering it. Please keep in mind that preparing, publishing and maintaining a data set for public consumption here is a good deal of additional work beyond what it takes for us to acquire, analyze and publish stories based on that data. We are most likely to do that if it publishing that data is a necessity for unique scientific or policy-making work that could not otherwise be done.

Since there are many additional data sets that have been requested other than this one, hearing about specific research projects people are undertaking (i.e., not just exploratory data analysis or searching for patterns to see what exists) would help us prioritize.

Hi @albertsun. We at @CoronaWhy are currently developing machine learning models to forecast COVID-19 hospitalizations and new cases at the county level as well as causal models to attribute causation. We would like to feed in data that captures mask wearing usage (ideally at the county level) as we would believe that this could help improve performance. We would also like to be able to simulate different scenarios with respect to mask usage.

Hi @albertsun! At Carnegie Mellon we are working on a project to model compliance with non-pharmaceutical intervention (NPI) policies and its impact on epidemiological predictions. We are focusing specifically on how people react to mask-wearing policies according to various underlying psychological and cognitive factors. Our goal is to integrate cognitive models predicting behavior in response to NPI policies with epidemiological models to achieve an end-to-end simulation linking information spread, adaptive behavior and disease transmission. Masks wearing are [unfortunately] at the intersection of politics and Coronavirus.

Political donors by district and NYT's today article could be an interesting complementary dataset, to see if mask wearing and political side actually have suspected correlation.

Can anyone outline the definition of "neighborhood" in this data set? It does not appear to be zip code and definitely is not FIPS county.
