No menu bar visible on startup #2500

> What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. install Sigil on Ubuntu 14.04(XFCE) (Trusty) using Synaptic
2. start Sigil from the Apps-Office menu

> What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

I expect a menu bar along the top of the window as per 
the user guide screen shot but no menu bar exists. There 
is no obvious way to get to preferences to turn it on.

> What version of the product are you using? 

Not certain since I can't use Help->About but Synaptic 
says 0.8.0

> On what operating system?
Lubuntu/XFCE 14.04 LTS Trusty

Same behavior using Ubuntu 14.04 with Sigil 0.8.0

Same issue there with Kubuntu.

Error messages from the command line :
error: line 1: missing or bad word count in the dic file
Hash Manager Error : 4

Same problem using Ubuntu 14.04 plus Cinnamon. Sigil is 0.8.2-1~trusty.
No menu bar available at all.
