• [x] create preview release 3.0.0-alpha1 and stage it to maven central (no vote, no doc changes, just bump, tag, deploy, stage, push). - see #666

• [x] version bumping
• [x] vote (cancelled, feedback now via alpha/beta releases upfront)
• [x] staging to maven central
• [x] merging wiki documentation
• [x] releasing wiki documentation
• [x] updating website with changelog
