This site provides some really exciting information (especially if you appreciate GIS) for understanding globalization and trade in Rome. The feature at the bottom is especially interesting because it allows the user to see which parts of the route would have taken longer or costed more to traverse. As the about page says, challenges posed by the landscape restricted movement, hence the environment played a major role in shaping the Roman world. The site serves as a potential explanation for why certain paths were taken more than others, and (because the user is able to take into account season and mode of transportation) why, for example, a path was only taken by certain people at certain times.

The design is overall very user-friendly, however if you toggle off the "terrain" feature, there is no border drawn at the coastline, and you can't differentiate between land and water, which seems inconvenient and leads me to wonder why toggling off the feature is an option.
