Orbis is a system that maps out the land and sea routes for trade and transportation within the Roman Empire, and allows users to measure travel distance, connectivity between cities, and the flow of movement across regions using its intuitive design. The site has a number of capabilities which can be used by researchers, but each option is thoroughly explained in pop-up boxes and notifiers to allow for optimum use of the site. Orbis also has flexibility in how it measures travel and commerce by adding realistic options of what kind of transportation is used, and what kind of funding is going into any expedition. All of these things mattered greatly in the Roman economy, and Orbis is designed to allow researchers the most accurate representation of this.

There are a number of research opportunities made possible by this site. Economists can use this to measure transportation speed and the costs to go along with it between various regions of the Empire. Historians can observe which cities had the best trade access and measure how people moved and migrated to different regions.
