I really like how this website opens on a massive overlay that integrates key background information, as well as references to examples of how the online model itself can be used for research. The overlay guides users through the information and context they need to know in order to fully understand where the project came from as well as how to actually navigate it for their own purposes. The "tutorial" option has a similar effect. I really like both the overlay and tutorial options as design decisions that deal with the question of how to guide users through information on a research/project website when they are all so different and the user likely has so few expectations to intuitively guide them through how the site is organized.
