Fix various startup issues #155

This makes Descartes at least runnable on my Ubuntu box.

@aphyr I brought in all of your fixes but I wanted to avoid the SSL thing since I wasn't sure how you're using that. If it's something we should support, I'd rather do it via environment variables. Thoughts?

If you're ok with it, I'm going to close this for now but we can continue to discuss the SSL stuff.
