Hi Colin,
We discussed the issue on 12-15-2014 Call.
OBI has both "analytical chromatography" and "preparative chromatography". They achieved different objectives. The textual definitions should reflect the logical axioms.
We do need to improve textual definitions. Do you have any suggestion on it?
Thanks,
Jie

Hello,
I'm looking at the definition of "preparative chromatography":
"the use of a biomaterial's preferential affinity for either the mobile phase or the stationary phase to separate it from other materials of differing affinity"
I don't think this adequately describes it as opposed to chromatography in general. The "biomaterial" part looks much more like the IUPAC Orange Book definition of "affinity chromatography":
"This expression characterizes the particular variant of chromatography in which the unique biological specificity of the analyte and ligand interaction is utilized for the separation."

What I've temporarily done in CHMO is to put "analytical chromatography" and "preparative chromatography" as synonyms of "chromatography" (CHMO_0001000), which is itself a temporary class before I consult you all properly about how OBI is handling these high-level classes.
Best wishes, Colin.
