Definition (free text, with reference(s), please. PubMed ID format is PMID:XXXXXX)
An epithelial cell that is part of the endometrial luminal epithelium, forming a continuous layer lining the uterine cavity. This cell provides a barrier between the uterine environment and the embryo, undergoes cyclical changes in response to hormones during the menstrual cycle, and plays a crucial role in embryo implantation. Characterized by its tall columnar shape, this cell transforms during the window of implantation into a short columnar or cuboidal cell, loses polarity, and becomes receptive to blastocyst implantation.
Throughout the menstrual cycle, luminal cell of endometrium undergoes significant structural changes: proliferating under estrogen during the proliferative phase to thicken the endometrial lining and differentiating under progesterone during the secretory phase to prepare for potential implantation. This cell expresses WNT7A, and LGR5 during the proliferative phase, transitioning to express VTCN1 and SULT1E1 in the early secretory phase, and LEFTY1, IL6, and PTGS1 in the mid- to late-secretory phases.
