This is redoing #26

Weird thing with serialisisation, couldnt figure out what when wrong on @LCCarmody as her commits look correct.

@rays22 we should never merge anything with spurious diffs - too many things can accidentally go wrong..

OK, I will be more strict with line ending format differences.
