UBERON:0000110 neurula stage, needs to be redefined? #84

Hello Uberon Team,

Currently working on the creation of a Atlantic Salmon developmental stages ontology, I realise that the 'neurula stage' such as defined in Uberon can not be applied to the fishes, where neurulation process starts occurring while epiboly is still under development and some somites already appear. As a consequence, there is no xref in UBERON:0000110 neurula stage to ZFS class, which I understand, but the definition of neurula stage does not exclude the fishes specific neurulation process, only the _relationship: precededby UBERON:0000109 ! gastrula stage makes obvious we can not apply this definition to fishes. May the creation of a fishes specific neurula stage class be useful? or maybe to redefine the UBERON:0000110 neurula stage?

Thank you for your attention, and open to discussion

Anne

After having contacted ZFIN team, Wei-Chia Tseng [wtseng@zfin.org] commented:

Thank you for reaching out to ZFIN. Zebrafish embryonic developmental stages are modified from Kimmel et al., 1995. Developmental Dynamics 203:253-310. According to the publication, the times of neurulation and segmentation overlap so extensively the zebrafish does not have a distinct "neurula period" of development, such as occurs largely before segmentation in amphibian embryos. This is the reason why only segmentation is shown after the gastrulation. If you have any questions, please let me know.
