@cmungall @mellybelly @drseb I think we should model atherosclerosis disease progression with MONDO. I think there are VI stages not VIII see http://circ.ahajournals.org/content/92/5/1355/tab-figures-data I think we should rename the HPO term Atherosclerosis (HP:0002621) to Atherosclerotic lesion and then we can add the six stages. THis will require some work on the MONDO side. For now, I am adding a term called Atherosclerotic lesion, but we can start to refactor the remaining hierarchy once we are defining diseases in MONDO.
I am defining Atherosclerotic lesion as Def=A lesion associated with atherosclerosis, a multifactorial and multipart progressive disease manifested by the focal development within the arterial wall of lesions, that ranges from teh development of a fatty streak, plaque progression, and plaque disruption. Atherosclerotic lesions demonstrate consistent morphological characteristics, which indicate that each type may stabilize temporarily or permanently and that progression to the next type may require an additional stimulus.
This is the paper with the definitions for Types I-III https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8172861 and this one is for Types IV-VI https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8181179
We had a term called atheromatosis. Type IV atherosclerotic lesion is also called atheroma, and thus atheromatosis means the presence of one or more atheromas. I think it is better to refactor this term and have atheromatosis be a related synonym-I sam saying this because atheromatosis is not a very specific description and it sounds more like a disease designation.
