A new term, "manubrium mallei" (MA:0002985) has been created, with synonyms: "handle of malleus", "malleal manubrium", "malleus handle", "malleus manubrium" and "manubrium of malleus". It has been difficult to determine what the most appropriate 'preferred' name should be (see attached notes for examples of usage) and I will continue to investigate this.

I did a quick evaluation of papers for which phenotypes were annotated to "abnormal malleal manubrium" and it's children. (See attached notes.) It appears that, for the mouse malleus, 'manubrium' is used preferentially over 'handle.' "Malleal manubrium" and "manubrium mallei" are also used infrequently. The term used most commonly is "manubrium of the malleus." In order to remain consistent with current MA nomenclature conventions, I have changed the preferred name to "malleus manubrium," retaining all other names as synonyms.

George Gkoutos also wrote: could I ask whether MA would consider malleal processus brevis - def according to MP below: the short projection extending from the base of the manubrium of the malleus which contacts the upper part of the tympanic membrane where the tympanic cavity makes a deep pocket (epitympanic pocket) surrounding the cartilaginous nodule

I have confirmed the "malleus process brevis" as an appropriate term to add to the mouse anatomy ontology. However, in contrast to that indicated by the MP hierarchy, I believe that it is a separate structure from the 'manubrium" and will add it as a direct part-of child of "malleus." (I will inform the MP curators accordingly.)

I also plan to add "malleus head" and "malleus neck" to the MA, again using standard nomenclature guidelines.
