There appears to be at least two distinct usages for the term "mesocardium." Below is a compilation and attempt at organizing some of the various definitions.
1a. Dorsal mesocardium - the part of the mesocardium dorsal to the embryonic heart; it breaks down to form the transverse sinus of the pericardium.
1b. Ventral mesocardium - the part of the mesocardium ventral to the embryonic cardiac tub; transitory in all vertebrates; in higher mammals, it breaks through as soon as its component layers of epicardium make contact with each other.

It should be kept in mind that the MA ontology is intended to cover the entire postnatal period for the mouse and, thus, some structures that are considered to be "embryonic" for humans may persist postnally in the mouse. This appears to be true for the "dorsal mesocardium" but not for the "ventral mesocardium".
For clarity, and in accord with the Edinburgh developmental mouse anatomy (EMAPA), MA:0000098 has been renamed "heart mesentery", and the relationship between MA:0000482 "dorsal mesocardium" and "heart mesentery" changed to part_of.

dorsal mesocardium is an only-child
.........po MA:0000072 ! heart ..........po MA:0000098 ! mesocardium *** ...........is_a MA:0000482 ! dorsal mesocardium
are there other types?
Is the meaning of "mesocardium" the same in embryology? If not, is there a synonym that can help distinguish the two?
