Following the Uberon call of October 24th, 2022: General agreement that visceral muscles should not be included in musculoskeletal system
. We can go ahead with the first part of the proposed fix (re-define musculoskeletal system
and the associated terms so that they refer to skeletal muscles only).
It is unclear that there is a real need for something like muscle system
(that would encompass both somatic and visceral muscles). The consensus is not to create such a term for now, until/unless someone expresses a need for it.
I now believe we might need a muscle system
(encompassing both somatic and visceral muscles) after all.
Otherwise we might run into a problem with musculature
and muscle organ
.
musculature
is part_of musculature of body
, which, as agreed above, should only refer to skeletal muscles. That means that musculature
itself should only be about skeletal muscles (this is actually already implied in the fact that musculature
has an exact synonym set of skeletal muscles
).
But muscle organ
, which is part_of musculature
, should probably not refer solely to skeletal muscles. It has several subclasses that clearly refer to visceral muscles, and it also has a subclass skeletal muscle organ
specifically intended to refer to skeletal muscles.
So muscle organ
should not be part_of musculature
, to avoid implying it is a skeletal muscle organ. But if we remove that relation, a whole bunch of muscle organs will no longer be attached to any kind of anatomical system.
We would then need to, either:
musculature of body
for somatic muscles, and to a to-be-created visceral muscle system
for visceral muscles;muscle system
that makes no distinction between somatic and visceral muscles and make muscle organ
part_of that system. This issue has not seen any activity in the past 6 months; it will be closed automatically one year from now if no action is taken.

Uberon has several terms intended to represent sets of muscles.
musculoskeletal system
(aanatomical system
), defined as a “anatomical system that consists of the muscular and skeletal system”;musculature of body
(aorgan system subdivision
), defined as “the subdivision of the musculoskeletal system that consists of all the muscles of the body”;skeletal musculature
(aanatomical structure
), not defined but classified as part of themusculature of body
;somatic musculature
, not defined but classified as a subclass ofmusculature of body
;enteric musculature
, not defined but classified as a subclass ofmusculature of body
and part ofdigestive tract
;musculature
, aorgan system subdivision
defined as a “subdivision of the muscular system corresponding to a subdivision of an organism; under this term, we have a bunch of
musculature ofIt seems clear that
musculature of body
is intended to encompass all the muscles of the body – both the somatic (aka skeletal) muscles and the visceral muscles. This is evident both in the text definition (“consists of all the muscles of the body”), in some of the synonyms (“set of all muscles”), and in the fact that bothenteric musculature
andsomatic musculature
are subclasses ofmusculature of body
.But
musculature of body
is also intended as being the muscular component of themusculoskeletal system
. Ifmusculature of body
includes the visceral muscles, that means the visceral muscles are also part of themusculoskeletal system
– I don’t think this is right, for at least two reasons:anatomical system
is defined as a “structure whose parts together to achieve some shared function”).Proposed fix
Have:
musculoskeletal system
defined as comprising only the skeleton and the skeletal/somatic muscles, with parts:skeletal system
skeletal muscle system
(currentmusculature of body
, here redefined to only include the skeletal muscles)If it is deemed important to have a class that encompasses both the visceral and somatic muscles (even though, as explained above, I don’t think they should be considered as a single “system”), then we can have a separate
muscle system
(defined as all the muscles, regardless of type), with partsskeletal muscle system
(which would be both part of themuscle system
and part of themusculoskeletal system
);visceral muscle system
.
