Thanks!
My first thoughts were that this was analogous to the vertebrate ENS and thus PNS, not CNS. But there are clear dangers of over-analogizing across metazoa. I'm also looking in FBbt to see how it treats analogous concepts and I'm even less sure. cc @gouttegd ?
I think we should treat this an an epic grouping these:
In FBbt, 'stomatogastric nervous system' is a 'organ system subdivision' and a part of the 'central nervous system'. Uberon follows the same classification for its 'insect stomatogastric nervous system' (based on the ID numbers the Uberon term has probably been created as a direct “copy” of the FBbt term).
Not sure if Uberon really needs both a term for the insect stomatogastric nervous system and the crustacean stomatogastric nervous system. If that system exists in all arthropods, shouldn’t we just have an arthropod stomatogastric nervous system?
Agreed.
I think we can selectively generalize this. We need to be sure there are no existentially depended on structures that restrict to insects. In this case there are not, and in fact the TC is already at the Arthropod level. So let's change the label.
See #3376 for a general summary of some of the complexities we have boxed ourselves into (but this issue is intended as a reference and not a blocker for action with this current batch of requests)
Preferred term label: crustacean stomatogastric nervous system
Synonyms
Definition (free text, please give PubMed ID) An extension of the nervous system that controls the rhythmic activity of the foregut. It is a pattern-generating circuit involved in feeding in all arthropods.
