Wrapper issues 327 328 #330

This should address #327 and #328. There are breaking changes in here, but I'm not aware of anyone using the SMC functions, so I think it's a good idea to deal with this now, rather than later.

Again confirmed that R CMD check on win-builder works fine, so there is something with GHA on Windows.
